FAM gets the nod on CAF course
Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has secured an approval from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to conduct the CAF A coaching licence course using locally-tailored syllabus.
For 10 years, Malawi has failed to host the continent’s top coaching qualification course after CAF instructed all its member associations to prepare their own syllabuses that meet the continental body’s requirements.

FAM president Fleetwood Haiya has described the approval as a major step in delivering the association’s transformation agenda.
“Another major milestone delivering our transformation agenda as CAF has officially approved FAM to conduct the prestigious CAF A coaching course after successfully meeting all eight requirements under the CAF Coaching Convention,” he said.
Haiya said the accreditation will make elite coaching qualifications more accessible to Malawian coaches and contribute to the long-term development of the game by producing highly qualified coaches capable of raising standards at club and national team level.
“With these milestones, we are transforming the game of football in Malawi for today and generations to come,” he said.
Haiya also acknowledged the contributions of several individuals and institutions that played key roles in securing approval of the local syllabus, including Benjamin Kumwenda, John Kaputa, Bhekuzulu Khumalo, Levie Mwale, Oscar Kanjala, the Malawi University of Science and Technology, Flames coach Kallisto Pasuwa and FAM technical director Yvon Avry.
Meanwhile, Avry has described the approval as an important step for Malawi football.
He said: “It is an important step for us because for some years now, we were not allowed to manage CAF A courses. CAF changed its approach six years ago and decided that all football associations in Africa should prepare a new, updated and high-level syllabus.
“What we have achieved in the last few months is fantastic, and now, with the response from CAF, we have been given the right to conduct CAF A courses.”
Avry said active coaches from top clubs will receive priority for the course.
